Small Rockets, Satellites, and Aircraft UAVs

Rocky Mountain and Virginia Space Grant Consortia have collaborated in graduate and undergraduate research to develop and fly small rockets and environmental sensing payloads. Four of the Rocky Mountain Affiliates are involved in the UNITY IV rocket design project using hybrid (solid + liquid) rocket engines which have been developed and tested by students. A flight this year exceeded 4,000 ft. altitude. The Affiliates are USU, BYU, UU and WSU. USU and Hampton U (an HBCU institution) are collaborating in the development of small rocket infrared radiometers for measurement of OH and O2 in the mesosphere. The sensor is a 2-channel radiometer called MINRAD, and prototype instrument has successfully passed through calibration. The thrust is for students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels to learn the approaches to designing, fabricating, testing, and calibration of small rockets with atmospheric measurement. Student and faculty exchanges are included among the two universities. The program is coordinated with small rocket projects at the Virginia, Colorado and Alaska Space Grant Consortia. Space Grant is also collaborating with the Utah Rocket Club in the design, building and launching of small rockets. This affiliation is a great aid in recruiting students into engineering and technology with the participation of parents.
